Who governs Kosovo now?
Since the 1999 NATO war against Serbia, Kosovo has been administered by the United Nations and militarily controlled by NATO in the form of a 35-country NATO-led force called KFOR. KFOR has about 17,000 troops in Kosovo, of which about 4,000 are Americans. In addition, as a member of the informal Contact Group for Kosovo (U.S., UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Russia) and a Permanent Member of the United Nations Security Council, the United States has a crucial voice in deciding Kosovo’s future.
